I
am Angie
Smith, Principle Broker of Angie Smith
Real Estate. I was born in Marshall,
Arkansas but lived in Arlburg, Arkansas
located in Van Buren County. Arlburg, a
once thriving farm and railroad
community on the river, is still home to
a handful of residents. Back then my
mother was the post master and my
father a farmer.
At age four I moved to Lute Mountain,
another farming community, where I
attended my first year of school in a
one room school house. The school
consolidated with Shirley Schools
(Shirley, Arkansas) that had a
population of 97. My mother feared the
move to a “big school” would be
difficult so she enrolled me in the
first grade again.
In 1953 cotton farming was becoming a
thing of the past. So in keeping with
the wave of the future and to provide
for his family, my father, Guy Cates
moved his family to Flint, Michigan to
pursue a career in the automobile
manufacturing industry. One of the
things I am most proud of is my
resiliency and ability to excel in
adversity. Moving from Lute Mountain to
Flint, Michigan was a culture shock for
an 11-year-old country girl; quite
different than moving from Lute Mountain
school to Shirley, to say the least.
I quickly realized that you can overcome
any challenge with hard work and
determination and found myself at the
top of the sixth grade classes. I
continued to excel in school and enjoyed
the challenges that it brought.
After High School I studied Business at
Mott Community College in Flint and
Marketing at Oakland University in
Rochester, Michigan.
I married and was a stay at home Mon
until, 1973, when I decided to pursue a
career in Real Estate Sales and became
licensed that year. While Real Estate
was my passion, in 1979 the Flint area
experienced a decline in property sales,
so I decided to add retail sales to my
resume. I got a job as the Jewelry
Department Manager at a large department
store, Woolworth. In keeping with my
history of rapid success, within six
weeks of being employed at Woolworth I
was promoted to Personnel Manager. This
move made me second in command over a $5
million a year operation with more than
150 employees. I accepted this challenge
with enthusiasm and worked there for the
next eight years.
In 1987, my husband retired from General
Motors and I was finally able to return
home, to the Clinton/Shirley area that I
so dearly loved.
I worked for Fairfield Communities
(Fairfield Bay, Arkansas) in various
capacities including Personnel Manager,
and then at the Community Club Utilities
Department as Secretary. Around 1990 I
became full time care giver to my
husband who had cancer. Shortly after my
husband’s passing I became care giver to
my Father who then also had cancer. Five
years later I began taking care of my
Mother, who was also diagnosed with
cancer. Both parents passed within a 6
week period. During this time I worked
as a bookkeeper for a Jewelry dealer,
Antique dealer and a Chiropractor.
Once my life began taking shape again, I
returned to my passion, Real Estate in
the area I so loved. I was then in a
position to devote 24-7 to my profession
so on my 60th birthday I received my
Arkansas Real License. My first full
year in sales I achieved the Bronze
Level Award (over $1 million in
Sales), second and third year I achieved
the Silver level (over $2 million in
sales) and the fourth year I achieved
the Topaz level Award with Century 21.
At the age of 65, well aware that it is
never too late to achieve success at new
heights, I made the choice to further my
Real Estate career and began classes to
gain a Broker’s license. Taking the hard
work ethic from my father and the love
of home from my mother, I received my
Broker’s license in 2008 and am now
ready to serve all your Real Estate
needs. I am licensed to work any where
in the state of Arkansas and will be
happy to serve you.
